Serevent is a popular asthma medication that is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline and was approved by the FDA in 1994. Servent is used to help prevent and control asthma attacks.

However, some patients using Serevent might face life threatening complications, and possibly death. In 1996 GSK initiated the Salmeterol Multi-center Research Trial (SMART), a 28 week safety study comparing Serevent and placebo in the treatment of asthma. According to the FDA, clinical trials have shown an increased rate of asthma related deaths with patients taking Serevent. These risks may possibly be greater for non-Caucasion patients.
